In a Twitter storm following Tuesday’s New York City terror attack, during which ISIS-loyalist “lone wolf” Sayfullo Saipov, 29, plowed a rental truck into a crowd on a Manhattan bike path, US president Donald Trump has called for the assailant to be sent to the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, a controversial US military prison in Cuba.
Beyond Gitmo, Trump also called for Saipov to receive the death penalty.
“NYC terrorist was happy as he asked to hang ISIS flag in his hospital room,” he tweeted. “He killed 8 people, badly injured 12. SHOULD GET DEATH PENALTY!”
No legal basis
According to Wells Dixon, a senior attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, the threat has no legal justification. “If the President sends this man to Guantanamo, then the President is an idiot,” Dixon told the Daily News.
Trump has also responded by calling the justice system a joke, and pressing for more extreme vetting when it comes to immigration and getting rid of a lottery program that enables immigrants entrance to the US.
“I have just ordered homeland security to step up our already extreme vetting program,” he tweeted. “Being politically correct is fine, but not for this!”
Trump has received criticism from those who point out his response to the terror attack is quite different from that to the Vegas massacre in which 58 people attending a concert were killed and nearly 500 injured.
Following the Vegas attack, Trump refused to address the issue of gun control laws in the US. “Well, we’re not going to talk about that today,” Mr. Trump had said during a news conference. “We won’t talk about that. We’ll be talking about gun laws as time goes by.”
