8 dead in New York truck attack

Six people were declared dead at the scene and two were pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect was shot by the police in the abdomen after he crashed his truck. He jumped out of is truck with two fake guns, one paintball gun and another pellet gun. The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov of Tampa, Florida several media reports.

“Allahu Akbar”

New York Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill said the suspect “did make a statement” after the crash, which led police to declare the incident an act of terrorism. The suspect is reported to have screamed “Allahu Akbar” after the crash, and that is a key reason authorities are looking at terrorism as a possible motive. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said “This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror.”

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said there was no evidence of a wider, ongoing threat but he said more police would be monitoring the streets on Halloween night.

The city’s annual Halloween parade near the crime scene, will still take place tonight, officials said.
